Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
PSHE is personal, social, health education and we learn about our feelings, our relationships and the skills we need as we grow up.
At Burpham Primary School we aim to help our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. Through our Relationships and Health curriculum, our pupils are given opportunities to develop confidence, self-motivation and an understanding of their rights and responsibilities within our diverse society.
The skills and knowledge that form the statutory Personal, Social and Health curriculum are taught in a variety of ways at Burpham: as a discrete subject following the HeartSmart program, via assemblies and through other subjects such as RE, History, Geography, English, Maths and Science, as well as through outdoor educational visits and community activities. Through Relationships Education, pupils will learn about the characteristics of healthy relationships, how to safely form and maintain relationships and how relationships may affect physical and mental wellbeing. The Health Education aspect of the subject gives pupils the skills and strategies to manage their own mental and physical health and includes topics such as sleep, first aid, emotional wellbeing, nutrition and the link between physical and mental health. Giving children the knowledge to be able to make informed choices with regards to diet and exercise.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
Relationships Education a statutory part of the curriculum and we agree that this is a crucial aspect of the primary curriculum. Safeguarding our children is of paramount importance to us at Burpham Primary School. We also believe it is essential that children are provided with age-appropriate information to assist them in making sensible choices and developing respect for themselves and others as they progress through the school.
Relationships and sex education is learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, relationships, sex, human sexuality and sexual health. Some aspects are taught in science and others are taught in discrete lessons as part of RHE.
A comprehensive programme of RSE provides accurate information about the body, reproduction, sex and sexual health. It also gives children and young people essential skills for building positive, enjoyable, respectful and non-exploitative relationships and staying safe both on and offline.
With this in mind, we use resources from ‘The Christopher Winter Project’ to support the teaching of RSE throughout the school. These resources have been commended by the PSHE Association and fully support the Science National Curriculum.

No Outsiders
In the Spring term of 2022, we introduced the No Outsiders resource into our PSHE curriculum. This programme of study is centred on the Equality Act 2010. It promotes understanding and acceptance of the protected characteristics named in the Equality Act.
It is important to us that we equip our children with the understanding and empathy to live as global citizens. The central ethos of the No Outsiders curriculum is ‘All different; all welcome.’ This links very closely with our inclusive values at Burpham Primary School and our three key rules of ‘Ready, Respectful, Safe’. The governing body is fully supportive of this approach.
The lessons will be taught using age-appropriate picture books once per half term and will run alongside our current PSHE and Heartsmart provision. The children will also take part in No Outsiders assemblies each week which will highlight how inclusivity is achieved in various ways around the world. The assemblies are often based on current events and always end with an understanding of how the message links to the No Outsiders theme.
If you would like to know more about the No Outsiders resource, you can access the website: No-outsiders.
