Early Years Foundation Stage
The Early Years Curriculum
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) extends from birth to the end of the reception year. Entry into Burpham Primary School is at the beginning of the school year in which the children are five. Children joining our school have already learned a great deal. Many have been learning in one of the various educational settings that exist in our local community and a secure transition from these settings is essential.
At Burpham Primary School, we recognise that every child is an individual and that children develop in different ways and at different rates. Children’s attitudes and dispositions to learning are influenced by feedback from others; we use praise and encouragement, as well as celebration/sharing assemblies and rewards, to encourage children to develop a positive attitude to learning.
At Burpham Primary School, the education we offer our children in Reception is based upon the following four principles:
- every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured
- children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships
- children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which the experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers; and
- children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. The framework covers the care and education of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities.

The EYFS learning and development requirements comprise:
- the seven areas of learning and development and the educational programmes (described below)
- the early learning goals, which summarise the knowledge, skills and understanding that all young children should have gained by the end of their reception year
- the assessment requirements (when and how practitioners must assess children’s achievements, and when and how they should discuss children’s progress with parents and/or carers)

Pupils achieve well and make good progress from their starting points. Learning is playful, practical, and purposeful and builds upon prior attainment. Our children enjoy coming to school.
